It is easy to get caught up in the things of this world. We have things pulling us in every direction. Our jobs, our families, TV shows, iPhones, advertisements…the list goes on.
In my family, we all value different things. Something that might get me excited or entertained may not be the same thing for my wife and kids.
My daughter, she loves watching re-runs of “The Office”. So do I. My son, he gets excited about football season coming up. So do I. My wife, she enjoyed getting up early to watch the Royal Wedding last weekend. I did not partake in that event.
My point, it is okay to get excited for these things, as long as they are put in its proper place, and stays in the proper order.
If I don’t have time to pray and spend time with the Lord, but I do have time to watch a ballgame, something is off. If I don’t put any thought into God during the day, but I can spend time on a hobby, my priorities are not in order.
Again, none of those things are bad, as long as they don’t take God’s place as center of your life.
1 John 5:21 – Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.
What John is saying here is that we need to be intentional about putting God back in His rightful place as absolute Lord of our lives. This may be a daily thing for some of us, or a simple reminder once in a while for others.
So sit back and enjoy that ballgame, get up early and watch a couple from England get married (personally, I’d rather…never mind, not even going to finish that sentence – I don’t need to get myself in trouble), but remember to keep God in His rightful place in our lives.
Proverbs 3:6 – In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.
