Like I have mentioned in a previous post, the Lord has me on a study of the “Fruit of the Spirit”. Because of that, if you are reading this blog, you too are on the journey!
Monday’s are my day off, so last Monday morning I grabbed my Bible, a book I’m going through and headed to the coffee shop for a couple hours to sit and study (and drink caffeine). This day, I was studying the fruit of kindness and goodness.
One of the things I read on Monday was regarding the similarities of these two. They are very close and work together to produce good fruit. Kindness is a sincere desire for the happiness of others. Goodness is the actual activity to advance that happiness.
This is actually looking past ourselves for the betterment of others. Apart from God’s grace, most of us naturally tend to be concerned about our responsibilities, our commitments, our problems, our joy and our plans. The fruit of kindness and goodness takes our eyes off ourselves and on to other people.
With these virtues, often times we can look for the spectacular…the grand gesture. God isn’t always looking for that. It’s the little things, sometimes unseen, that makes life more pleasant for other people.
Colossians 3:12 – Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Think about who you can show some goodness to this week? Is there a need you can meet in someone’s life? Is there something you can do to just bring a smile to someone (a larger tip than normal to your server, a visit or a call to someone you haven’t seen or spoken to for a while, buying a coffee for the person behind you in the drive thru line who you don’t even know?). In what way can you live out these two fruits this week?
2 Thessalonians 3:13 – As for the rest of you, dear brothers and sisters, never get tired of doing good.
